As warm weather arrives and many RVers’ thoughts turn to the road, FMCA members share where they like to go by answering the question: What’s the best state or province for motorhome travel?

For about 20 years we have visited the central Oregon coast, mostly in the middle of summer. The climate there is wonderfully cool, when people just 50 miles east are sweltering. Roaming the rugged coastline from Gold Beach to Lincoln City is captivating. Mail boat rides up the Rogue River and unique shopping in Lincoln City provide great variety. We visit historic lighthouses along the coast, then watch daredevils race up the steep dunes near Florence and Dunes City, and the hang gliders plying the “green air” of the slopes near Alsea Bay. We have lunch in the small town of Yachats, where the ice cream parlor and curio shops are welcome extra treats. We watch fishing boats come and go at the bays at Florence and Newport, where some docks offer the fresh catch.

Maine, hands down! In addition to incredible coastal vistas and great seafood restaurants along the Atlantic Ocean, the Pine Tree State offers scenic roads for motorhomers who enjoy traveling off-highway roads. Maine is close to everything you want to do; or you can do nothing at a secluded campsite in the middle of pine trees. You can spend time at a mall or a boutique crafts shop just outside the splendor of Acadia National Park; watch the sun come up atop Cadillac Mountain; or shop 24 hours a day at the legendary L.L. Bean store in Freeport. The Old Port District in Portland has been rebuilt and revitalized with gourmet restaurants and myriad small shops that are delightful on a rainy day or evening walk before dinner.

This one’s easy: wherever we’re going next! If it’s a state or route we’ve explored previously, just looking at the atlas while making our trip plans brings back memories of previous journeys through the area. Even familiar places look different with the passage of time or changes of the seasons. And there are always new campgrounds, rallies, places, shops, and restaurants. If we’re planning to go to a new area or route, that’s even better. And, when it’s a whole new location for a major rally, such as FMCA’s 82nd International Convention in Bowling Green, Ohio, this July, it doesn’t get much better than that!
