Rear View: June 2010

George Miller once quipped, “The trouble with eating Italian food is that five or six days later, you’re hungry again.” All kidding aside, Italian cuisine is revered by so many food lovers that we felt compelled to seek answers to the following question:

What’s the best Italian restaurant you’ve discovered in your motorhome travels that you would recommend to other RVers?

Bove’s of Vermont, in Burlington, Vermont, set the standard for us many years ago on how marinara sauce is prepared. Though we no longer live in that state, we remember the lines to get into this small restaurant, and it was worth it. It has been around since 1941 and has served prestigious customers, such as the late President John F. Kennedy. We aren’t the only ones who liked their food, as they now sell it online (www.boves.com).

We are full-timers in our 2007 Tiffin Allegro Bus. When we eat out, we always try to find restaurants owned by locals. It was our fortune to find one in Florence, Alabama, where we always enjoy staying at the scenic and beautiful McFarland Park, on the banks of the Tennessee River. Several people suggested we try Trattoria di Ricatoni’s, on Court Street in downtown Florence (www.ricatonivalentino.com). We weren’t disappointed. Before our brick oven pizza was prepared, we were treated to hot homemade bread brought to us inside a brown paper bag and served with marvelous herbs mixed with delicious olive oil. Each time we have been to Ricatoni’s we have been treated as special guests, which makes us look forward to our next visit. Any pizza we enjoy in the future will always be compared to Ricatoni’s famous brick oven pizza. Not only is this pizza the best anywhere, but the pasta dishes are superb, and the salads are always fresh and presented in a special way.

Our favorite is Zia’s on the Hill, located in the quaint Italian “Hill” district of St. Louis, Missouri. Its atmosphere is very warm and friendly. They have little tables outside where you can relax and have a drink, and the restaurant itself has a series of rooms that resemble having dinner in an Italian home, with white tablecloths and candles, and a very friendly wait staff. You will find a very wide variety of amazing food that includes steaks, seafood, chicken, and wonderful “true” Italian pasta dishes. We visit Zia’s every time we go to St. Louis (www.zias.com).
