RVers know the scenario: motoring in a new locale and encountering a wonderful and unexpected surprise. Several FMCA members share their experiences by expounding on this month’s topic:
Describe a memorable attraction or scenic view that you accidentally discovered during your motorhome travels.

Driving along Route 66 in Arizona, heading toward Las Vegas, Nevada, we decided to take a slight detour to Winslow, Arizona. You see, we love rock and roll, and we love the music of the Eagles. “Take It Easy” was the group’s first hit song in 1972 (“Standin’ on a corner in Winslow, Arizona. . . . “). While there we decided to have lunch at La Posada, a restored hotel near the center of town. Female servers were in period dress, and the menu reflected the fare of the times. We were very surprised wandering around the halls of this beautiful building, and, more importantly, learning the history of the famous hotel and the builder, Fred Harvey. Harvey had a vision to provide a better way to run a restaurant. His hotels were located near railroads to provide the very best care and service to railroad travelers. Since discovering the Harvey Hotels, we will be traveling to others as well to learn the history of this amazing man.

Trans-Canada Highway 1 and the area around Banff, Alberta, provide some of the most amazing views in the world. As we drove along the road or rounded a curve, the mountains seemed to simply explode from the earth right in front of us. Having seen mountains all over the world, I believe this area of the Canadian Rockies to be the most awe-inspiring. We are full-timers, and I always keep my camera handy as we travel, because views like this can’t be planned and are too incredible to trust only to memory. I use a Kodak digital zoom camera and find that by setting it to the “Landscape/Distant Scenery” mode, I can capture beautiful views, even when we’re on the move.

Our favorite way to RV is to wander and search for different things to see. That is how we discovered Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, east of Montrose, Colorado. I found it on my atlas in red, and we decided to try it. It was quite the road to get up there, but it was so worth it. The views are spectacular. The canyon is very deep but looks almost alive with color. There is a north and a south rim, but we visited only the south rim. Camping is available at both rims. You also can go hiking there. It is well worth the ride to see the park, and there are other things in the area to see also.

1. Describe an act of kindness shown to you by a fellow RVer.
2. What’s your favorite kind of potluck (organized/impromptu, chapter or family gatherings, breakfast/lunch/dinner/happy hour, etc.), and why?
