A meal or snack with friends or family is enjoyed in many circles, including the motorhome crowd. Because food seems to pep up so many gatherings, let’s savor this month’s topic:
What’s your favorite kind of potluck, and why?
***
I prefer an impromptu potluck at any time, but especially for happy hour or dinner. By doing something impromptu, you put the emphasis on people and fellowship. The food becomes secondary. An impromptu gathering removes all pressure about what to fix, and you can creatively come up with whatever you have in your rig, and no one cares or judges what you bring. It’s relaxed, with fun and enjoyment taking center stage.

I like any kind of potluck, because it gives me a chance to make dishes that are way too big for just the two of us. Usually everyone just brings whatever they want, and it always surprises me with the variety of foods we get. Once when we had a fish fry, though, we ended up with only fish, rolls, and dessert. Thank goodness I had the ingredients for a salad. It is always nice to get together with friends and family, and one person doesn’t have to prepare all the food.

As FMCA members since 1988 and listed in “Stoppin’ Spots,” we like the 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. happy hour mini-potlucks — strictly hors d’oeuvres. An easy and quick get-together for all involved because, after all, it’s really the conversation and camaraderie we’re interested in. We’ve converted several full-timers and northerners to call Green Valley, Arizona, home (elevation of 2,900 feet). Our evenings have warmer temps in the winter and tolerant summer temps. We gather many RVers and are always looking for more to join us on Thursdays. If you’re in the area, give us a call — we’re listed in the Green Valley community directory.

We have potluck dinners at our Granite Staters chapter rallies quite often. I think my all-time favorite is our Soup and Chowder Feasts. The chapter provides the salad and rolls, and the members bring their favorite soup/chowder. I’m always surprised that we’ve never had a duplicate dish.

My favorite kind of potluck is any kind of potluck. There is a special camaraderie that grows when sharing a meal. RVers are naturally friendly with each other. When you add the element of breaking bread together, that friendliness often develops into long-lasting friendships. There is also the fun of tasting what each person has brought, exclaiming over its goodness, and seeking the recipe. The food is always delicious and usually includes some dish you’ve never tasted before. We try combinations we might never have thought of making on our own. Just like RVing, every potluck is a wonderful adventure!
