Tech & Travel Tips: January 2012

Remote Control In Its Place
My wife and I are always misplacing the remote control for our bedroom TV. To make sure it remains in a commonly accessible place, we put a strip of heavy-duty hook-and-loop fastening tape on the remote and attached the matching piece to the mirror at the head of our bed. It’s not perfect, but it does work when we remember to put the control there.

Clear Tape Tab
How many times have you struggled to find the end of a roll of clear tape? To make it easy to locate each time, make sure the end of the tape is placed off center after you have cut a piece. When storing, lay the roll with the tab you’ve created facing up. The tape will stay clean and ready for the next use.

Keeping Things Cool
In our motorhome, all of the electronics for our three televisions are kept in a single compartment. The shelf is filled with receivers, DVD players, and such. The problem is that heat tends to accumulate in this area when the door is closed. To help circulate the air when traveling, we use a refrigerator fan. When we’re camped, the cabinet remains open for good airflow, making the fan unnecessary.

Editor’s Note: To improve air circulation when the door is closed, consider cutting several inlets into the sides or back of the cabinet to allow fresh air in and provide an outlet for the fan to exhaust the warm air.
