In September 1972, when I owned just one SLR camera and a single lens, I rented a Type A motorhome in New Jersey. I drove it with my wife, son, and in-laws through New England, Maine, and into New Brunswick, Canada, photographing the beautiful scenery along the way on Kodachrome film. Nineteen years later, traveling with six lenses and three camera bodies, I rented a Type A motorhome in Las Vegas. Accompanied by my adult son, I drove it to the south rim of the Grand Canyon, the Painted Desert, and Flagstaff, Arizona, recording the spectacular views on various types of film. Now that I’m fortunate enough to finally own a motorhome, I continue to pursue my photography hobby, recording my travels with a digital SLR camera, using multiple lenses. Since my darkroom is no longer necessary, I can make beautiful color prints and enlargements on the road with my inkjet printer.

Being a person whose hands need to be busy, I usually take handwork to do while traveling. During our three-month trip through western Canada and most of Alaska in our 40-foot Allegro Bus, I crocheted edging on flannel baby blankets for the Blue Bird Circle Resale Shop. The Houston, Texas-based shop sells the 36-inch-by-44-inch blankets to support the Blue Bird Circle Clinic for Pediatric Neurology at Texas Children’s Hospital and other philanthropic activities. Blankets are cut and hemmed by volunteers for the “at home volunteers” to crochet the edging. Crocheting is relaxing to me and also gives me a sense of being productive. It also allows me to read maps and road signs; check out the scenery; and get water, coffee, and food for my copilot (husband), who drives “Miss Pansy.”

The hobbies I pursue during motorhome trips include reading, knitting and crocheting, photography, and scrapbooking. The photographs are used for my scrapbooking and for making note cards. One container holds all I need for scrapbooking, so not much space is taken in our storage area. My hobbies are perfect for our motorhome travels.
