Rearview: November 2013

November 1, 2013

As one FMCA member couple writes below, music helps to melt away the miles. Perhaps one of the best parts is that it doesn’t matter what genre of music one enjoys; it’s all a matter of personal preference. This month’s discussion topic:

What song(s) or type of music do you enjoy most when traveling in your motorhome?

Years ago, when satellite radio was in its infancy — XM and Sirius were still competitors — I wrote an article about how XM radio might impact the RV lifestyle. I was so impressed with the technology, I immediately purchased a Delphi “boom box” portable XM receiver and signed up for a year’s subscription. The boom box, which plugs into the cigarette lighter, has ridden in my motorhome cockpit ever since. It is equipped with a remote, so I can change channels and volume easily from anywhere in the coach and enjoy the sounds from my youth anywhere on the continent. In my opinion, every motorhome should have a SiriusXM receiver. No commercials, and no searching for the best music, sports, or talk from coast to coast.

We enjoy music and have eclectic tastes. We have always operated under the premise that great rock-and-roll music helps melt away the miles. And when we need to pound out the miles, I really like the amped-up, hard-charging rock and roll of Heart. But I always make sure to set the speed control. My other favorites are Phil Collins, Fleetwood Mac, and Adele. We both love a good beat and a good voice. My wife, Barb, enjoys Neil Diamond, Whitney Houston, Dolly Parton, and Queen, and we both love fast-paced bluegrass. When we get to big cities, we turn on the radio and listen to the local stations to see what they’re playing. At the same time, we get to hear local weather and possible traffic updates. Music and the radio both help make each trip another safe and fun journey.

Future question:

1. If you have time to use your motorhome only on weekends, what’s your favorite camping destination?
2. Describe a favorite place to just “meander” in your motorhome.
