Tech and Travel Tips: December 2015

December 1, 2015

Space Saver

I almost never use the ladder attached to the rear of my motorhome. The ladder has an extension that must be removed and stored when we travel. But the extension takes up a large amount of space because of two tubular pieces, each approximately 9 inches long, that protrude at 90 degrees to keep the extension away from the coach.

I modified the ladder extension by first removing the tubular pieces, which have female threaded inserts. I obtained two plastic knobs with threaded inserts, one for each tubular piece, and threaded these onto the bolts. I then drilled holes in the legs of the ladder extension so that the tubular pieces can be attached there, flush with the steps. The knobs with threaded inserts secure the tubular pieces to the extension. The extension can now be stored flat, which saves space, and the tubular pieces easily can be returned to their original positions.

Editor’s note: The new holes should be drilled well away from the original holes to prevent weakening the vertical tubes.

Towel Holders

Our new motorhome was short on towel racks. We solved one such problem by using 3M Command hooks in our shower area, where they are convenient but not obtrusive. We have found many other uses for Command products in other areas of our motorhome. The hooks have adhesive strips and can be removed without leaving marks or holes as needs change.

Editor’s note: The “bath” category at www.command.com includes products designed for wet conditions.
