Opportunities to enjoy Mexican fare seem to be everywhere, ranging from small mom-and-pop eateries to popular chains. As the responses below show, Rear View readers have discovered some tasty spots:
Describe a great Mexican restaurant you’ve enjoyed during your travels.
When landing in an area, one of the first things we do is look online for reviews of places to eat. We found Mi Casa Mexican Restaurant in Benson, Arizona (732 W. Fourth St.; 520-245-0343). The statement “Never judge a book by its cover” applies here. We drove up to find a place that caught us off guard by its exterior appearance. Nonetheless, we went in to find a beautifully decorated, small, family-run restaurant. The wait service was warm and friendly. As it has been said, “You eat with your eyes before your taste buds.” We first feasted visually on beautifully plated dishes of deliciously and freshly prepared foods. Our experience at Mi Casa exceeded our expectations in every way.

We always take our 17-foot foldable Klepper Kayak along. Its two bags fit nicely in the storage compartment under the jackknife sofa of our Born Free Type C motorhome. That allows us to pull over just about anywhere we see an inviting body of water and launch our kayak for a little paddle. One recent stop was at Moss Landing on U.S. 1 between Watsonville and Monterey, California. Naturally, a good paddle makes for a good appetite. We came upon a colorfully decorated restaurant, The Whole Enchilada (7902 U.S. 1; 831-633-3038), right on U.S. 1 at the Moss Landing Harbor District. Were we glad we tried this place. Very nicely decorated inside and out, real linen and silverware, plus a very friendly and welcoming host/owner named Ray. The extensive menu has all the traditional Mexican food items. It is one of the few restaurants offering cooked beef tongue, called Lengua Veracruz — very delicious. The service was attentive, efficient, and friendly. We ended the meal with Amelia‘s Flan (a traditional Mexican custard) and a stiff, espresso-style coffee. The day we visited, Ray gave free lottery tickets to random customers. Although our ticket didn’t win, we had a winning dining experience.

By far, the best Mexican restaurant we have enjoyed during our travels is The Pink Store Restaurant in Palomas, Chihuahua, Mexico (866-474-4299; www.thepinkstoremexico.com). It is a retail store with a full-service restaurant. When you walk in, they ask you what you would like to drink. A margarita, of course! After strolling through the store and shopping, we go to the restaurant for lunch. The extensive menu has something for everyone, no matter what your taste. A mariachi band goes from table to table. It is definitely a party atmosphere to enjoy with friends. We have never been disappointed.

The best steak I’ve ever eaten was at Tio Lucas in San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, Mexico (+52 415 152 4996; facebook.com/tiolucasofficial/). We had chateaubriand for two with a real caesar salad (with the raw egg). San Miguel is close to a number of pottery plants where you can watch artists paint and fire the pottery. I recommend this area and restaurant to anyone traveling to this part of Mexico.
