Members of the Central Alabama Travelers arrived in 16 motorhomes for a rally to celebrate the chapter’s 15th anniversary. It was held October 17 through 20, 2016, at Leisure Acres Campground in Cleveland, Georgia. The chapter’s anniversary certificate was presented by Jim Duncan, national vice president, Southeast Area, and his wife, Betty; and Southeast Area officer Ken Winters and his wife, Linda.
The chapter’s founder and first president, Julie McClure, has passed away, but those who knew her still talk about how hard she worked to form the chapter and keep it going. Five families who joined the chapter when it formed in October 2001 are still members. Membership now stands at about 20 families.
The chapter organized some wonderful trips in 2016. At an April rally at Sugar Sands RV Resort in Gulf Shores, Alabama, Ken and Linda Umsted suggested a rolling rally. Members said yes, and in May, the rally began in Vicksburg, Mississippi. We then proceeded to Canton, Texas, site of one of the largest flea markets in the United States. From Texas, we headed to Crater of Diamonds State Park in Arkansas and dug for diamonds.
Past rallies have included a trip to the East Coast, where members rented boats and fished for scallops; and a visit to Biloxi, Mississippi, where we rented a sailboat for a sunset cruise. With FMCA’s help, we have continued to camp, go to new places together, and enjoy fellowship.
