Tell about a great bakery you’ve discovered in your motorhome travels and describe your favorite treats from there.

Orange Blossom Bakery & Café — Hands down, this is the bakery to visit on Hatteras Island, North Carolina! Every October, we and our two canine kids spend the month RVing on the island, and the stop at the Orange Blossom for an “Apple Ugly” is a must-do. It is a huge, wonderful combination of apple pieces, cinnamon, sweet-roll dough, and glaze. One feeds us all. The bakery is conveniently located on State Route 12 in Buxton, in the heart of Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Parking is available on the east side of the highway. You won’t be disappointed!

While traveling through Lancaster, Pennsylvania, we came across the Good & Plenty Restaurant & Bakery in nearby Smoketown, Pennsylvania (Route 896), and found blueberry muffins and whoopie pies that were extremely delicious. I highly recommend you try them.

We have been camp hosts in Glacier National Park for 12 years. From Glacier, take Camas Road and then follow the gravel (okay for a towed vehicle) and sometimes paved road to Polebridge, Montana. There, Polebridge Mercantile houses the best bakery in northwest Montana! The bakery is off the grid and uses only generator and solar power to make the most delicious pastries and treats. Our favorite is the huckleberry bear claw, but the sticky buns, ricotta and chocolate drizzle, and cookies are also to die for! Polebridge is rather remote and worth the scenic drive. If you visit on July 4, you can enjoy the parade. Just be ready to meet crowds of people on that day in an otherwise quiet, out-of-the-way place.

We have wintered in Texas’ Rio Grande Valley for 15 years or so. One of our favorite places is Ornelas Bakery & Food Store in Rio Hondo. Although they offer a big variety of foods, our very favorite is the apple fritters. They are the best we have ever encountered in 50-plus years of travel. We use these fritters to welcome back our winter friends who live in our RV park. After arriving and settling in, we drive to Rio Hondo and purchase at least two dozen fritters. We make several pots of coffee and invite our friends over for everyone to catch up on what’s been happening since our last season together. This simple gesture is enjoyed by all who participate.

When we visit Lancaster, Pennsylvania, we always stop at the Shady Maple Farm Market in nearby East Earl to purchase their fabulous fritters, fruit bread, and shoofly pie. Everything displayed is made on-site. Of course, we always check the cookies, breads and rolls, and half cakes. The photo, birthday, and wedding cakes are so delicious and unusual. Try the doughnuts, pies, gourmet breads, cupcakes, and items I probably forgot.

When I saw this topic, I immediately thought of two great bakeries. One is Le Bakery and Cafe in Biloxi, Mississippi. The Vietnamese ladies there make wonderful French bread that sells for a mere 40 cents a loaf! This place also sells bubble teas, French Vietnamese-style po boys, and delicious pastries filled with cream cheese and topped with chocolate. YUM!

A trip northeast in 2016 yielded my first visit to Wild Blueberry Land in Columbia Falls, Maine. At the intersection of U.S. 1 and State Route 187, you suddenly see a dome-shaped building housing folks devoted to promoting Maine’s tiny wild blueberries. You can pick up a homemade blueberry pie; get a cone of the best blueberry ice cream ever; or buy a variety of homemade candies, including Maine’s famous Needhams, a chocolate candy with a filling made of coconut and potato. Cookbooks, gift items, and postcards feature the blueberry in a starring role, and you can even have your picture made seated on a throne that declares you as the Blueberry King.

One of the most memorable bakeries we have visited is the Village Bakery & Coffee Shop in Cambridge, Wisconsin, when we spent a summer in Cambridge co-managing a campground. My favorite item was their blueberry scones. They were the most marvelous ones I have ever had.

Future questions:

1.Tell us about a game that you enjoy playing with your family or friends when RVing (card games, board games, lawn games, etc.).

2. Many casinos allow RVers to park overnight. What are some of the best casinos with RV accommodations?
