Unforgettable scenery, wildlife, and area attractions entice motorhomers to visit countless parks throughout North America. Below are two selections in response to this month’s question:
Describe your favorite park.
On July 20, 1969, man took his first steps on the moon. The next morning, my husband left for a one-year tour in Vietnam. He was career Air Force, 36 years old, and we had three children. When his year ended, our next assignment was Mountain Home Air Force Base, Idaho. Before he returned home, I had purchased a used Volkswagen pop-top camper. One of the most memorable parks we camped at was Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve in Idaho, near Arco. It has the most unusual and weird landscape, as it is a vast area of lava tubes, beds, and cones. It was truly awesome to sit around the campfire and listen to the rangers talk about the park. Here we were, one year after man’s first walk on the moon, experiencing just a tiny bit of what it must have been like! We camped a lot in that good ‘ole VW, and it served us well. Now all these years later, we are planning a trip out West this summer to retrace some of our steps. Yes, we are planning to return to Craters of the Moon, but this time it will be in our Safari Trek!

One of the most naturally beautiful parks we’ve visited is Glacier National Park, Montana. Our most memorable trip was in May 2002. We had planned a tour bus ride over Going-to-the-Sun Road, but several days before our arrival, fresh snow covered the entire park. Our hope for going over the top was crushed. George and Kathy, owners of the beautiful Glacier Campground where we stayed, suggested we take a helicopter tour, which left from just across the road, and fly over Glacier. What a breathtaking experience. Never have we seen such rugged peaks and snow-covered beauty. The Upper Lodge and Ranger Station were under rooftop snow. White mountain goats left footprints on the smooth mountainsides as they ran. Small avalanches tumbled down steep slopes into the abyss below. This pristine memory of Glacier calls us back again and again (www.glaciercampground.com, www.glacierhelitours.com).
