Campground Spotlight

Rincon Country West RV Resort, Tucson, Arizona

The RV park that won the 2018 Mega Park of the Year Award from the National Association of RV Parks and Campgrounds (ARVC) is still celebrating. The prize went to Rincon Country West RV Resort, a 1,160-site park in Tucson, Arizona. Coincidentally, ARVC gave its 2018 Large Park of the Year Award to 460-site Rincon Country East RV Resort, also in Tucson. Both RV parks are commercial members of FMCA.

It was the first time ARVC had ever given those two awards to the same owner. George O’Leary, 88, said he was humbled by the achievement. He opened the top-rated Rincon Country East RV Resort in 1979, and Rincon Country West RV Resort in 1983.

Like Rincon Country East, Rincon Country West is a gated, 55-plus community. It has a pool, a library, sewing and crafts rooms, a woodworking shop, pickleball and tennis courts, and more. Rincon Country management team member Wendy Bykofsky said that at Rincon Country West, fun events like pancake breakfasts and other activities fill the calendar. The park’s free shuttle takes park guests to museums and attractions around Tucson.

Ms. Bykofsky said Rincon West has spaces for transient RVers and ample room for FMCA chapter rallies. That’s good news, because FMCA’s 101st International Convention & RV Expo will be held at Tucson’s Pima County Fairgrounds March 26-29, 2020. But, she said, now is the time to reserve sites for dates leading up to or after the event. For chapter rallies, ask for office manager Annette Weinell at (520) 294-5608; email annette@rinconcountry.com.

Rincon Country West will give a 15 percent discount to FMCA members on daily or weekly space rentals made for dates 10 days prior to the convention and 10 days following. Please mention “FMCA Convention” for the discount.

Cell Coverage

To stay connected, you need to know where you can pick up a cell phone signal.

Coverage? app from Two Steps Beyond LLC

Coverage? app from Two Steps Beyond LLC

Coverage?: The app overlays and compares coverage-area maps for AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon. No internet is needed to access the maps, which are stored within the app on your device; that means you can determine where you can get a signal even when you don’t have one. The type of coverage — LTE, 4G, 3G, 2G, and roaming areas — also can be viewed as overlays. The maps cover the entire United States. Available for iOS ($2.99) and Android ($2.99) with in-app options to upgrade to a high-definition map subscription. Free trials are available. www.twostepsbeyond.com/apps/coverage.

OpenSignal: The app provides independent coverage maps for all major network carriers. The app’s signal compass shows the direction a signal is coming from. Users can run a test to determine their network speed (for downloads and uploads), as well as their network responsiveness. The app also displays a user’s history of speed tests, as well as the amount of time spent connected to 2G, 3G, 4G, or no signal. And, the app finds free Wi-Fi hotspots. Free for iOS and Android. www.opensignal.com/apps.

Hiking

Denver, Colorado, is known as the gateway to Colorado’s magnificent Rocky Mountains. It’s located within one to three hours of a national grassland; four national forests; scores of regional and city parks and preserves; and, of course, Rocky Mountain National Park.

RVers who enjoy spending time on the trail may find a great companion in Base Camp Denver: 101 Hikes In Colorado’s Front Range (Imbrifex Books). Author Pete KJ, an expert hiker and international explorer, provides abundant information about Colorado’s Front Range for hiking enthusiasts of all levels.

The 384-page paperback is jammed with colorful scenic photos of the terrain that awaits. An overview of each trail includes detailed driving directions to trailheads, plus information about elevation, hiking time, parking, and rest rooms. An “At A Glance” chart lists ratings from 1 to 5 for trail conditions, difficulty, suitability for children, scenery, photography, and solitude. The chart also lists the distance/time needed to traverse the trail, trailhead elevation/total elevation gain, notable features, and the best season to hike it. Trail maps also are included.

Pete KJ began his outdoor explorations at age 3 in the wooded ravines behind his Seattle, Washington, home. As a youth, he explored the Cascades and Olympics, and eventually traveled farther afield to the Pyrenees, Alps, Himalayas, and Andes. He’s resided — and hiked — in Colorado since the 1990s.
