Dump Stations

That was a fantastic weekend of camping, wasn’t it? And now that your RV’s holding tanks are full, you know what to do, but do you know where to go?

Google Maps: You’ve no doubt discovered that this app offers far more than directions from point A to point Z. Enter “RV dump stations” into the search bar, and you’ll see locations pinpointed on a map. Tap a location and up pops the phone number, images, and other information. Free for iOS and Android.

RV Dump Stations: The app lists more than 5,900 RV dump stations in the United States and Canada, including rest areas, truck stops, KOAs, and more. When trip planning, you can search anywhere for dump station locations. The app can show a route to a dump station from the user’s location, as well as a street view of the dump station. The app’s users help keep it up to date by submitting new locations. 99 cents for iOS.

RV Dumps: Using the database of the comprehensive AllStays Camp and RV app, RV Dumps filters all points that have a dump station, including rest areas, truck stops, private campgrounds, and parks, as well as wastewater treatment plants, dealerships, gas stations, and more. The app checks your location and displays up to 150 points on a map view. One-touch calling is possible for places that have a phone number listed. The look-up part of the app works even when iPhone has no cell service. $2.99 for iOS.

You Gotta Wear Shades!

Yes, sunglasses can give us instant panache, but that’s not the most important reason for donning shades. Sunglasses should be worn year-round — for health reasons. Here are five ways eye experts indicate a good pair of shades can benefit your health:

  1. Protect you from skin cancer. Close to 10 percent of skin cancers show up on eyelids or in the eye area.
  2. Save your vision. Cataracts and macular degeneration can result when ultraviolet rays penetrate the eye. Other medical problems from sun exposure include photokeratitis, or “sunburn of the eye.”
  3. Help you drive. Make one turn, and the sun shades on your RV may not block ol’ sol — at least not for a few blinding seconds. Sunglasses protect you from road and vehicle glare and reflections, too.
  4. Block sand, dust, and wind. Sudden gusts can send you straight into the land of dry eyes, a most unpleasant place. Worse, winds can carry debris that becomes lodged in your peepers.
  5.  Post-surgery protection. Right after LASIK surgery, sunglasses help your eyes adjust. Forever after cataract surgery they’re a must, for the lens you received surgically may not protect your eye as well as the original.

Finally, when choosing sunglasses, be sure to pick out a pair that blocks 99 to 100 percent of UVA and UVB rays.

After that, it’s all about looking cool, baby!
