Windshield Woes

Q: I have a 1992 30-foot Newport motorhome from Cobra. Unfortunately, the coach is an orphan as Cobra went out of business around the mid-1990s, and one side of my windshield has a crack in it. All the windshield repair shops around here tell me I have to have the coach’s model number. I can find the data sheet with tire and weight information but no model number. Can you help me?

Tom Himler, F268533
Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio

A:
Finding a windshield for an older coach whose manufacturer is no longer around can be difficult, but there are several companies that do handle such requests. These include Coach Glass (800-714-7171, www.coachglass.com); Duncan Systems (800-551-9149, www.duncansys.com); Northwest Windshields (800-421-0022, www.northwestwindshields.com); RV Glass Solutions (888-777-6778, www.rvglasssolutions.com); and DCM Company (888-303-8570, dcmco.com)

When calling these companies, try to have as much information about the motorhome and windshield as possible, including the make, model, and year of the coach; the windshield’s dimensions; and any logo or “bug” information on the windshield.

Sunfire Setup

Q: I recently had my 2004 Pontiac Sunfire equipped to be towed behind my motorhome. But I cannot determine which fuses I need to remove when preparing to tow it. My owners manual states it can be towed with all four wheels down, but there is no mention of which fuses to remove. I also wish to avoid the odometer from accumulating mileage when the vehicle is being towed.

Dan Bazinet, F345889
Ottawa, Ontario, Canada

A:
I’m not familiar with the specifics for every vehicle that’s approved by the manufacturer for flat towing, but I do know that the owners manual is your primary guide for your particular vehicle. If it doesn’t mention anything about removing fuses, then you shouldn’t have to. Your vehicle should have an electronic odometer, so it won’t accrue mileage if the ignition key is not turned on.

Wi-Fi Info?

Q:
know I read an article awhile back on Wi-Fi in your magazine. I have looked in all the back issues for one year and cannot find it. Can you tell me what issue it is in?

Steve Clark, F286539
Kingman, Arizona

A: The June 2004 issue of Family Motor Coaching magazine featured a story titled “Wireless Internet Access” by Bill Hendrix (page 82). If you no longer have that issue, the article also is available on www.fmca.com in the FMC Magazine, Back issues section. Or, to receive a photocopy, please send your request, along with a stamped, self-addressed, business-size envelope to Editorial Assistant, Family Motor Coaching, 8291 Clough Pike, Cincinnati, OH 45244.

What About Remco?

Q: You provide good coverage on vehicles that can be towed four wheels down, but have you ever done an article on Remco? Can every car or truck be made towable four wheels down with a product from Remco? Remco has three solutions, but what are the costs? Why choose one way versus another? Are there vehicles that cannot be converted by Remco? In deciding on a new towed car, I need more information. I use a dolly now, but I’ve run the car over the front of the dolly twice! Plus, I destroyed the air dam bumping the dolly. Is that as likely to happen on new cars as with my 2001 Lumina?

Carl Evans, F286562
Des Moines, Iowa

A: We have included information about Remco and its products in the last two January issues of the magazine, running the information within the article that discusses towed vehicles. In the January 2005 issue, a short piece about Remco and a brief synopsis of the products it offers appeared on page 69. A longer article appeared in the January 2004 issue starting on page 74. If you are looking for a new towed vehicle and have narrowed your choices, you might want to call Remco at (800) 228-2481 and speak with a company representative. On Remco’s Web site, www.remcotowing.com, you can click on the “Consumer Request” link at the bottom of the page, which will take you to the “Sales Request Page.” Here you can request information about towing specific vehicles.
