For some motorhomers, June, July, and August are particularly carefree. For others, they are part of the entire patchwork of seasons to be enjoyed. As the summer wanes, see how these FMCA members enjoy themselves, as evidenced by their answers to this month’s question:

What do you do as a family, group, or FMCA chapter to celebrate the summertime holidays during a motorhome trip?

***

For the Fourth of July holiday, we organized a bicycle ride around Lake Champlain between New York and Vermont, with friends using our motorhome for the sag wagon, or support vehicle. Our goal was to stay as close to the lake as possible for the views. Despite a few missed turns, we biked 307 miles in six days. Our 31-foot Starcraft Ambient Type C was the right choice for the trip. There was ample room for the riders, and we were able to put a bike rack on the front and another bike rack in the Reese hitch on the back to carry all the bicycles to and from our starting point in Whitehall, New York. An added bonus was the use of the rest room while en route and the refrigerator to store cold beverages. While our friends tented, we had the luxury of a real bed at night.

A big part of motorhoming is choosing your destination based on the weather you want. We often migrate from South Texas to higher ground to escape the heat. This year we chose Angel Fire, New Mexico. At 8,400 feet elevation, the summertime climate is great. As with most parts of the country, small towns in the area hold special events to celebrate summer holidays. For many years, we have enjoyed visiting small towns for their “down home” Fourth of July parades. We find something charming about golf cart parades, parade marshals on horseback with a young child in the saddle in front of them, etc. This year Eagle Nest, New Mexico, provided the many smiles we have come to expect from such small-town events. Thirty miles west, 1,000-year-old Taos Pueblo is a step back in history, with its four-story adobe community. And, yes, there is always “local shopping” — in this case, on the 500-year-old square in Taos. These are the things that make motorhoming memorable.

Future questions:
1. If you use your motorhome to travel to sporting events, where do you go and what activities do you enjoy once you get there?
2.  What hobbies do you pursue during motorhome trips?
