Members of the New York Centrals chapter celebrated the group’s 35th anniversary during a rally at the Camillus Elks Lodge in Camillus, New York, June 14 through 17, 2012. New York Centrals members are from throughout central New York and southern Canada and have a rally the third weekend of most months from May through October. We were most honored to have FMCA national president Charlie Schrenkel; his wife, Jean; and their beautiful Tiffin motorhome at our anniversary rally.
Most coaches arrived Thursday afternoon. After parking, we renewed friendships with members we had not seen in a month, a year, or more. Happy hour, which is a New York Centrals staple, was followed by dinner at local restaurants.
During the weekend, we attended garage sales, played cards, enjoyed campfires, and had a hot dog roast. But most of all, we enjoyed each other’s company.
Saturday morning after breakfast, Charlie Schrenkel talked with us about FMCA, and many of our questions were answered. Members were extremely impressed with our national president’s passion and the many improvements he has made to FMCA.
Saturday night we had a sit-down anniversary dinner. Chapter founder and first president Andy Mancini gave an informative talk about the history of our group. During the mid-1970s, central New York RV owners were eager to form new chapters that would allow them to meet locally. Plans for the New York Centrals chapter were finalized by charter members who attended the FMCA summer convention at the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse, New York, July 26 through 29, 1977. One interesting fact that Andy highlighted was that the chapter has had two indoor rallies (in buildings at the state fairgrounds). Many anecdotes about past members, previous rallies, and older motorhomes were shared. In homage to the New York Central Railroad, our logo depicts a motorhome pulling a freight train loaded with water, food, fuel, and entertainment items, all the things needed for a great RV trip. This logo was unveiled at the 1977 convention.
During dinner, Charlie Schrenkel presented current chapter president Paul Hallagan with an anniversary certificate and check. He also gave a presentation about FMCA. Many past members who no longer own RVs attended the rally to celebrate with us. It was so great to see them.
The fun, food, games, and friendship lasted through Sunday morning. Before departure, Paul Hallagan was interviewed by local TV station YNN regarding the chapter’s anniversary rally and the RV lifestyle. What a way to conclude our celebration.
