Tech & Travel Tips: March 2013

March 1, 2013

Portable Desk

Most RVs can use more space for storage and organization. Our idea was a small magazine rack that is used as a desk and storage compartment while we are traveling. It has two self-closing tip-out files, and the top has small compartments for pens, tablets, eyeglasses, and other small items. It has a narrow footprint and is stored between the end of the counter and the recliner, so it takes up little room in the RV. We purchased ours at IKEA.

Atomic Clock

The atomic clock we have in our motorhome is a fantastic item for people who travel. It is small and always has the correct information when I need the time, date, and indoor temperature.

Mouse-Proofing Stored Food

Our motorhome, like most, was built with various paths for mice to enter. After closing off many of these paths, I realized there are some holes that just can’t be plugged. Most slideout assemblies have flexible water, sewage, and electrical wiring lines running through them that need oversize entry and exit holes to pass through. Even RVs without slideouts have the same flaw. Mice follow these paths like superhighways. But I did find a foolproof way to keep mice from getting into our food and utensils. First, we store much of our food in upper wall cabinets. The remaining food and our cooking utensils are kept in drawers to which we added hinged plywood lids. When making the lids, place the hinges so that lids will stay open by themselves when the drawer is fully open. We haven’t seen any evidence of mice in these areas since we put a lid on this problem.
