Sometimes you have to throw those “best-laid plans” out the window . . . and enjoy the experience. This month, we’re featuring a pair of responses to the following discussion topic:

Recall a time when you were traveling and an unexpected delay turned out surprisingly well.

There we were, 15 RVs in Mexico, waiting to cross the Sea of Cortez by ferry from Mazatlan to La Paz. My husband and I went to the ferry terminal to pay for the passage and get loading details. We were greeted with shocking news: no reservations and no boat! What? You must be kidding; we had reservations for months! Our ferry was being repaired, and no other boats were available. We explained that we had to cross to La Paz, as we had many reservations that were already paid, and we would lose the money if we did not get there. We sat and sat, while many telephone calls were made, and people came and went inside the office, all speaking in Spanish about our situation.  We were not leaving until they figured out how to get us across. After seven hours, we were told that a freighter was crossing one day later than when we had planned. We would take it. Much to our surprise, the freighter crossing was good. All RVs were elevated to the top deck, and everyone could walk their dogs. Best of all, we could sleep in our beds, use our bathrooms, and have access to our food! Once the RVs were parked on the top deck, a margarita party was enjoyed by all.

A few years ago, we were delayed at the Featherlite factory, awaiting the arrival of an air valve for our coach. Late in the afternoon, the salesman asked whether we would save the space next to us, as George would be coming in around 9:00 p.m. “George who?” Deanie asked. “George Jones,” he replied. Around 9:00 p.m. I helped the driver back into the spot. The next morning, we had a very cordial visit with the country singer; his wife Nancy; his daughter Georgette; and their driver Scott. Nancy gave us passes for their event at Silver Springs the following weekend. We cherish the pictures and the memories of our visit made by chance.
