GMC Motorhomes International Celebrates 35 Years

The GMC Motorhomes International chapter held its 35th anniversary convention from September 15 to 21, 2017, at Elkhart Campground in Elkhart, Indiana. Some of the attendees could recall the chapter’s first convention, held in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, in 1982. Others were attending their first GMCMI convention. Regardless, everyone shared a common goal: to celebrate GMC motorhomes and their owners. Jon Walker, FMCA national president, was an honored guest.

With 154 GMCs at the convention, Elkhart residents saw a number of the vehicles around town. Curious onlookers often asked about a motorhome’s model year, and we informed them that these amazing vehicles were manufactured from 1973 through 1978. There was an open house on Sunday afternoon. The popular event is fun even for longtime GMC owners. Rarely are so many of the vehicles in one spot, and since most of them are more than 40 years old, modifications to the exterior and interior can be extensive.

During our week together, we had plenty of opportunities to socialize, take tours, and enjoy many dining experiences in town and at the convention. The educational aspect of the convention also is very important. Attendees could choose from many seminars, ranging from servicing the vintage vehicles to coach weighing, which helps ensure correct weight distribution. Nontechnical seminars were offered as well, on topics such as exercise, cooking, and genealogy.

Elkhart, Indiana

Most people know that Elkhart, Indiana, the hub of the RV industry, is home to many manufacturers and suppliers. IT is also home to the RV/MH Hall of Fame and Museum. Convention attendees also discovered local attractions such as the Shipshewana Flea Market, beautiful Wellfield Botanic Gardens, and the Conn-Selmer factory, which manufactures a broad variety of musical instruments.

The week in Elkhart went fast, and too soon it was time to say good-bye. At our farewell dinner, Jon Walker congratulated us on reaching the 35-year milestone and being FMCA’s largest GMC chapter.

GMCMI holds two conventions each year. The next one will be in Tucson, Arizona, in April 2018. If you are an owner of a classic GMC, consider joining the chapter. You’ll not only gain information about service and parts, but you’ll be able to take part in the fun and fellowship. For more information, visit www.gmcmi.com.
