Imagine access to a private beach cove, places to moor a fishing boat, a solitary campsite facing a lake backdropped by a rock cliff, and moonlight reflecting off the lake each night. It’s all available at Roger’s Rock State Park in New York. Budd, the park ranger, provides the best customer service we’ve ever experienced at a campground. He led us to the “Honeymoon Suite,” located down a steep dirt road that opened out onto Lake George. Our coach faced the lake, and there was room for our fishing boat. We swam in the cove and had a private little beach. We camped there for five days under the October harvest moon. We fished, boated, enjoyed evening campfires, watched rock climbers scale Roger’s Rock, and relaxed. (Our cell phones and air card Internet service did not work in the park, but a short ride to nearby Ticonderoga, New York, restored our connectivity.)

My favorite place to visit for many years has been Pismo Coast Village RV Park, Pismo Beach, California. I just came back to our motorhome after sharing a beautiful sunset and a glass of wine with my wife while sitting by the kiosk, watching the pelicans, seagulls, and ducks play in the stream that flows between the RV park and the ocean. The pelicans at times can be so numerous as they splash and play in the water. As you turn from the ocean, the view of the sunset reflected on the houses that climb up the hillside is stunning. We frequently walk to downtown Pismo Beach for dinner, where several restaurants compete to serve the best clam chowder on the West Coast. Also, many fine wineries are located nearby. The RV park provides security, a pool and hot tub, shuffleboard, miniature golf, pedal cars for two to four people, and more than 400 full-hookup sites. There is no place we would rather visit.
