Rear View: August 2013

This is the life.” How many of you have uttered those words while relaxing outside your motorhome, perhaps first thing in the morning or after a day’s journey? Motorhoming is such a great way to disconnect. Enjoy these mental pictures produced by motorhomers who responded to this month’s question:

What is your favorite sound when sitting outside at a campsite?

Our favorite sound is the laughter of friends and family around the campfire. Our two kids, now 41 and 38, still talk about when we took them camping in the Everglades here in Florida. We would set up our tent and go hunting for the “swamp thing” that was always lurking about. There are lots of night sounds in the swamp, and you better believe we made the most of them. We used that tent for years before graduating to a pop-up, then a travel trailer, followed by two fifth-wheels, and last November our first Type A diesel pusher. We still love it after all these years. These days, it’s the grandkids who go camping with us. We thank the many people who had the foresight to preserve our lands so we could pass along this American tradition.

Morning sounds. Coffee bubbling into the pot. Great aroma. Time to meet the beautiful outside world. My favorite time of the day. A hot cup in my hand, I head for the chair right outside our RV door. Cool, clear morning air seems to intensify sounds. A fish plops in the lake. A bird sleepily calls out a good morning. Early birds start scratching around looking for that worm. Water gently laps at the shoreline. A fisherman casts and I can hear the soft “clunk” as the lure hits the water. An enchanted hour. Peace reigns — until the first motorboat screams through and disturbs the quiet scene. The first minutes of the day seem to start me out in the right direction. It is a time to dream, to organize my thoughts, to prepare to face the day. It is a time to be alone, to be calm and quiet, to completely relax, to enjoy life.

Future questions:

1.  Describe an unexpected event or encounter you experienced during a motorhome trip.

2.  What song(s) or type of music do you enjoy most when traveling in your motorhome? Tell why.
