One of the advantages of motorhoming is the opportunity to explore while in the comfort of your coach. Several FMCA members shared their ideas of making road trips enjoyable by commenting on this month’s discussion topic:
Describe a favorite place to just “meander” in your motorhome.
When we joined FMCA’s Wild Goose chapter a few years ago, we never thought about how appropriate it was for us. As the old song says: “My heart knows what the wild goose knows, I must go where the wild goose goes,” or, in our case, where the next interesting road, or next interesting town name, or whatever strikes our fancy goes. What fun it is meeting a sweet teenage couple who adopts us as friends and gifts us with the girl’s first attempt at freehand painting. Or chatting with a young man who is excited about his chance to sing onstage at “Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge” in Nashville. Or running into a young 60-something woman whose bucket list includes traveling across the country in a 14-foot RV with her “boys” — her dogs Beamer and Chester. Wherever we wander, we meet people. It doesn’t matter where we go; we always find someone interesting. That’s where we want to be.

I’ve always loved maps. To me, planning is half the fun of a trip, for which a map is essential. We live in Arizona, and not being natives, the state fascinates us with its history, scenery, and current attractions. On my home office wall hangs a 4-foot-by-5-foot plastic-covered map of Arizona, which I can write on with dry-erase markers. As my wife and I hear or read about a point of interest, we record it on the map. Before a trip, we work out a route between each of the points that we can dial into our GPS. If we vary from the predetermined route, the GPS will automatically reroute us. Right now we’re assembling the components of a long springtime trip around Arizona’s four borders. Although it’s a roughly square circle, we’re calling it our “Arizona Loop.” Your meandering can be more enjoyable if you plan it on a map first. A wall map is more fun than a paper map, and you don’t have to refold it every time you use it!

A favorite place for us to “meander” in our motorhome is along the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail, or any area with an abundance of golf courses. Alabama has a number of campgrounds from north to south, and having our “home” with us makes it even more ideal! What better place to relax after a day on the links than in the comfort of your coach?
