A little personalization is a good thing, right? Especially when one’s motorhome may be alongside similar-looking models. Two readers describe how they make their “yard” appealing. The question:

How do you “decorate” your campsite when parked?

As the old saying goes, “There’s no place like home.” We tend to give our campsite a homey touch while retaining the rustic beauty and grandeur of the forest and the great outdoors. The centerpiece is the campsite table covered with a green-and-white checkered vinyl tablecloth, further adorned with the American flag, a flowerpot of red silk azaleas, a fruit bowl, and, for the evening, a Coleman lantern. After circling comfortable chairs for friends around the fire ring, we place a few oil-burning tiki torches and several small solar lights around the campsite, including two larger solar lanterns suspended from the front of the motor coach — our campsite is all aglow! It was in this homey dry camp near the Grand Canyon that we celebrated our 66th wedding anniversary last summer.

We decorate with solar lights! Let Mother Nature pay the electric bill. The lights are placed at the most visible area in our campsite. They are in the shape of butterflies, hummingbirds, and dragonflies. During the day, they appear to look like crystal. At night, they change colors from red to blue to green to purple, then back to red. The change of colors is constant, and it is difficult to see two colors at the same time . . . very pretty. We have a total of nine lights, and they are a “walk stopper” when people are taking their nightly stroll. We also have a large ceramic cat, with big solar lights for eyes that brighten the area. We always get a big thank-you from the RV parks we stay at for not using expensive electricity.

Future questions:

1. What is your main motivation for motorhome travel (e.g., snowbirding, visiting family or friends, attending FMCA events, for work, just because)?

2. What is the most unusual or intriguing tourist attraction you have visited?
