When the Gulf Coasters chapter holds a rally, it officially runs from Friday to Sunday, although members typically start arriving on Wednesday. Such was the case when the chapter held its 30th anniversary rally June 19-21, 2015, at Anchors Aweigh RV Resort in Foley, Alabama.
High temperatures and humidity, few breezes, and many bugs meant grilling outside was not an option until Thursday. It was still hot — this is the South, after all — but the guys dutifully manned the grills and produced dinner. Big fans chased the bugs away, and we spent the remainder of the evening visiting and enjoying each other.
We were pleased that Jim Duncan, FMCA national vice president, Southeast Area, and his wife, Betty, and Doug Pearson, vice president of the Southeast Area’s North Florida region, and his wife, Ann, could spend the weekend with us. Chapter charter members attending were Johnnie Strawbridge and Don and Audre Hughes.
Members gathered at The Gift Horse Restaurant in Foley for dinner on Friday night and breakfast on Saturday morning, and what a spread both times. It was traditional Southern buffet at its best. Saturday evening’s meal consisted of heavy hors d’oeuvres and a great deal of visiting and conversation. The chapter’s traditional potluck was Sunday morning. It may sound like we do nothing but eat, but the shoppers managed to find plenty of time for browsing and buying.
We also managed to fit in the chapter’s business meeting on Saturday morning. That afternoon featured the official recognition of our 30th year of existence, and Jim Duncan presented a check from FMCA.
We eagerly look forward to our 35th!
