The joy is in the journey, some say. Others savor the jacks-down, awnings-out relaxation at a campsite. What about you? Here’s a sampling of responses to this month’s discussion:
What part of a motorhome trip do you like the best?
The most interesting, if not the most spectacular, scenery in the United States is discovering the heroes and national treasures in everyday people. Two of the many individuals and their stories that we encountered embody World War II heroics and survival.
While shopping at Costco, we met Denise, a food demonstrator. She and her family migrated to the United States after World War II. During the war, she and her sister were active in the French underground; she was 14 and her sister 15. Together, they would sneak food to the Nazi-held POWs in France. Her family slept in the streets, because the Nazis were still bombing the buildings.
Another national treasure we met was an Indian code talker in the Pacific Theater. He told us about fighting as a Marine until the end of the war when he was sent to Japan, where he learned Japanese while helping to retrieve armament surrendered to the United States.

On the windy, winter day in 2012 when we bought our motorhome, I distinctly remember thinking, “We won the lottery!” When we saw our RV, she immediately became part of the family. Our daughters threw themselves into the bunk beds screaming, “This one is mine!” My husband sat in the driver’s seat, and the smile that spread across his face radiated for miles. We were home, and yet there we were in the middle of an RV lot. That is the beauty of RVing. No matter where you are, you are home. Our daughters are young but growing fast. My hope is that one day they will look back on their childhood and remember our adventures on the road.
My favorite part of every RV trip is the very early morning. We have a great window right above our heads that we leave open. I love to breathe in the clean, cool air and listen to birds wake up. As I lie there, I soak myself in the moment. I can hear the girls softly snoring in their bunks while my husband snores maybe not as softly. But there we are. Home, together, peaceful with the coming day’s endless possibilities. It’s a perfect moment for this lucky girl, and I hope they never end.

If we had to pick one thing we love the most about traveling in our motorhome, it would be relaxing at camp. We love to hang out under the awning with a cold drink in hand and take in the new scenery. That is one of the most enjoyable things about living in our RV full-time . . . we always have a new and different front and back yard! We say that going to a new campground is like a box of chocolates: You never know what it will be like. Each spot has its own personality with specific characteristics, making the RV lifestyle interesting all the time.

Future questions:
1. Describe a great Mexican restaurant you’ve enjoyed during your travels.
2. Looking ahead to FMCA’s 95th International Convention in Chandler, Arizona, next March, what’s a great travel spot to explore out West at that time of the year?
