Chapter Spotlight: Northern Lights

November 1, 2017
Chapter Spotlight: Northern Lights
Northern Lights members celebrated their chapter’s 25th anniversary this past June in Oscoda, Michigan, which included a cruise on the AuSable River.

Members of this chapter celebrate the beauty of their home state of Michigan.

Many of the original members of the Northern Lights chapter were from northern Michigan, which became part of the inspiration for the chapter name. Today, 25 years later, the chapter has members from all over the state.

“It’s a very active club,” said Tom Bird, the Northern Lights’ vice president of communications. “We enjoy local activities and entertainment wherever we go.”

If you’re looking for a fun group to rally with between June and September, you’ll want to check the Northern Lights’ 2018 schedule and start planning now. The chapter will have its first meet of the year at FMCA’s Great Lakes Area Rally (also called GLAMARAMA) in Allegan, Michigan, next June. Then in July, they’ll be at the port of Munising, Michigan, on the shores of Lake Superior, the starting point for a fabulous boat tour of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.

In August and September 2018, rallies are planned to be equally as spectacular, centered around activities and events in Traverse City and Grand Rapids, Michigan.

“Our members did the Lake Superior Circle Tour through Canada and back a few years ago, and we’re looking forward to possibly doing that again next year,” Tom said.

“We are truly blessed with our freshwater Great Lakes providing interesting and spectacular sites for our rallies from coast to coast. We seek out festivals, auto-related museums, art festivals, and factory tours. We love to explore anything of interest in each area. Besides our fun rallies, our chapter does provide funds for a local nonprofit charity at our September rally each year.”

The majority of the chapter’s rallies are held in the Lower Peninsula, but they do venture over the “Mighty Mac” (Mackinac) bridge to the Upper Peninsula for a rally every year or two.

Tom added that rallies are not always on the same days of the week. “Some of our members are still working, so we try to vary it,” he said.
