For more than 25 years, the former New Jersey state fairgrounds has been home to Grounds For Sculpture, an outdoor art showcase.

It’s a lush, art-filled refuge today. But it sits where the old New Jersey State Fairgrounds once languished. Sculptor J. Seward Johnson envisioned a more accessible, familiar environment for all people to enjoy sculpture. As a result, Grounds For Sculpture opened in 1992, and today it is bursting with blue-ribbon-worthy art.

Presently 280 outdoor works of art are displayed at this complex in Hamilton, New Jersey. Indoor exhibits can be found, too, in six galleries. Two cafes, a gift shop, and a fine-dining establishment also are on the site.

The works of art are set amid trees, grasses, flowers, and water features over 42 acres. Sculptures representing the past and the future have been created by world-famous and emerging artists. Pieces are whimsical, symbolic, representational, or abstract; they come in sizes ranging from colossal to medium and small. Some sit out in natural open areas; others are surprises hidden among trees. In the Water Garden, sculptures are enhanced by this element’s characteristics.

Wander where you want. Sit among the art. Absorb the integrated experience of art, nature and architecture. Let it speak to your spirit. As the seasons change, so does the overall scene and atmosphere.

Rat’s Restaurant

What more can you do at this fascinating place besides experience the magical blending of landscape, sculpture, and architecture? Dinner events at Rat’s Restaurant, the fine-dining establishment, include a combination dinner and moonlight tour. This gives an entirely different perspective on all aspects of the outdoor art. Other events include film screenings, adult art workshops, concerts, and happy hours. Check the Grounds For Sculpture website for details about events.

In addition to the fine dining in Rat’s, you can try one of the cafes and eat amid sculpture pieces at the outdoor seating area. Stately peacocks roam freely about the grounds, making this an even more natural affair.
