Family Matters: Northwestern Chapter Marks 55 Years
Northwestern members celebrated their milestone anniversary in a magnificent setting in Washington state, joined by members of other FMCA chapters.

For more than half a century, this chapter has gathered for fellowship and fun.

The Northwestern chapter was founded in 1967 by several dedicated individuals who worked tirelessly to promote fun, family, and relaxation. We are now celebrating 55 years of being among the first FMCA chapters in the Northwest Area. Bud and Marje Fouts, Rocky Ybarra, and many others have since enjoyed the “extended family” relationship, fun, and shared experiences within this chapter.

Fifty-five years is worthy of celebration; few other chapters have this type of longevity, with continuous activities from year to year while promoting FMCA values.

This year, the Northwestern chapter held a rally during the Fourth of July weekend. Also attending were the Olympic Peninsula Ramblers and the Pacers Northwest chapters in a combined rally to recognize the special occasion. Then-Northwest Area president Don Schleuse and his wife, Barbara, attended as well. Don presented chapter president Linda deBord with a certificate and check commemorating this remarkable achievement.

The rally site was located on private land in an indescribably beautiful part of the northern Washington coast where the snowcapped Olympic Mountains meet the deep blue waters of the Pacific Ocean. The camping area accommodated 15 coaches overlooking the Sol Duc River. We shared the fun of getting to know folks we hadn’t met before and learning about their experiences. We were able to expand our scope of “extended families,” and we were all able to celebrate the moment in true FMCA tradition.

The backdrop of this gorgeous river valley was the stunningly beautiful stand of conifers, oaks, and cedars on a mountain with nesting bald eagles flying up and down the river every day. There were also large and small fish jumping to feed on bugs near the water. Jim deBord kept the large campfire burning day and night for all who wanted to sit and share experiences in this Garden of Eden.

Linda deBord and her friend Sandy Ferguson prepared many of our meals, with most folks contributing other dishes, which made for an outstanding mealtime cherished by all who ate.

Friends, family, food, and fun — what more could anyone ask for as we intermingled our shared beliefs in this beautiful country and the RV family lifestyle?
