To celebrate the chapter’s 40th anniversary, GMC Cascaders members participated in a rolling rally that covered 1,375 miles in 18 days and included a stay at Riverhaven RV Park in British Columbia.

Appreciation From GMC Cascaders

Congrats on your February issue! I have a tiny, tiny inkling of what it takes to produce a magazine like this and must tip my hat to you — you always do such a wonderful job.

I also really appreciate you including the GMC Cascaders’ article and photos in the February issue (page 74). Our club members were surprised and very pleased as well.

More About Utah Highway 12

I am writing to comment about a letter titled “Warning About Utah Highway 12‚ that appeared in the November 2023 “Readers Write‚ column.

I’ll start by saying I have been motorhoming for over 18 years and currently travel in a large Class A motorhome.

While the photo is very accurate, the letter itself is misleading. It is true the “Hogback‚ portion of Highway 12 is a bit narrow; however, the lanes are normal width, and there is a small shoulder in most places. The narrow portion comes into play if you happen to drive off the road and the small shoulder. There is little room for error if you drift too far, and you could roll down a long, steep embankment. While that may sound threatening, it is really no different than driving on any other road. If you drift too far off a city street or a country road, you will run into trouble. What makes the “Hogback‚ more intense for an RV driver is that you are naturally sitting up much higher than you would be in a car, making it seem like there is no road next to you; all you see is a very deep canyon on both sides of the road for miles.

I took the exact route described in the article (Boulder, Utah, to Escalante, Utah) and found the drive to be easy, very scenic, and safe (as long as you pay attention to the speed limit and the road itself). I certainly would NOT recommend trying to take photos or even looking too long at the scenery if you’re the driver; best to leave the photo taking to your passenger.

For those of you who are intimidated by what “appears‚ to be a narrow, dangerous road, I would take an alternative route as the letter writer in the November issue suggests.

Actually, if this information had been published prior to our trip this past September, I may have avoided Highway 12 as well, missing out on all that beautiful scenery. I found the drive to be safe, fairly easy, and breathtaking. Watch the turns, watch the speed limit, and enjoy the ride. You’ll be glad you did!
