Learning the Ropes — or Rather, the Hitch!

Learning the Ropes — or Rather, the Hitch!
Boot camp attendees received classroom instruction and also experienced manual trailer backing and technology-assisted towing behind the wheel of a Ford vehicle.

A solo RVer’s experience at the Ford Towing Boot Camp.

When I heard about the Ford Towing Boot Camp taking place at the RV/MH Hall of Fame in Elkhart, Indiana, this past September, I knew I had to be there. As the membership director for Family RV Association — and a solo female RVer — I wanted to experience firsthand the towing technology our members talk about and see what all the excitement was about.

IN THE CLASSROOM: KNOWLEDGE MEETS CONFIDENCE

The day began with an engaging classroom session led by Ford’s expert trainers. We dove into towing safety, weight distribution, and the innovative systems designed to make towing easier for everyone.

From Pro Trailer Backup Assist to Trailer Reverse Guidance, the technology was eye-opening. Ford’s instructors walked us through how these features in the company’s vehicles help drivers take control with confidence — literally turning what used to be a tense, sweaty-palmed task into a smooth, almost effortless experience.

BEHIND THE WHEEL: FROM MANUAL TO MODERN

Then came the best part: putting it into action!

Each participant had a chance to try both manual trailer backing and technology-assisted towing. I’ll admit, my first few manual attempts were a mix of determination and laughter — probably a scene every RVer can relate to! But when I switched to using Ford’s technology, it was like magic. A gentle turn of the dial, a few calm adjustments, and the trailer went exactly where I wanted it to go.

It was empowering to feel that blend of control and trust in the technology. By the end, I was smiling ear-to-ear and thinking, If I can do this solo, anyone can.

A NEW PERSPECTIVE FOR FRVA MEMBERS

What stood out most was how accessible this training was. Whether you’re a seasoned traveler or just starting out, understanding your vehicle’s towing systems builds confidence, and that’s something every RVer deserves.

As I looked around the RV Hall of Fame, surrounded by decades of RV innovation, it hit me how far our industry has come. This Boot Camp wasn’t just about towing; it was about embracing progress, empowering RVers, and inspiring independence on the road.

WHY I’D RECOMMEND IT

If you ever get the chance to attend a Ford Towing Boot Camp, I encourage you to go! It’s equal parts education and adventure, and you’ll walk away with newfound skills and confidence. I left the training more knowledgeable, excited to share the experience with our members, and interested in exploring how FRVA can help more RVers take advantage of opportunities like this.

After all, the open road feels even better when you know you can handle whatever’s hitched behind you.
