Many motorhomers delight in discovering tasty foods during their travels. Some will find the entries below particularly mouthwatering. This month’s topic:

Describe a great seafood meal you’ve enjoyed while motorhoming.

Many years ago when our son and daughter were 7 and 6 years old, respectively, we went on a business trip from south Florida to Oceanside, Maryland, in our RV. We were on the water where the crabs were plentiful. We bought crab nets and chicken necks for bait; the children proceeded to catch a bountiful amount! That night we made spaghetti with homemade crab sauce. Was it ever good, and our son and daughter were so thrilled to put food on the table!

A seafood meal never to be forgotten! As employees  of Fantasy Caravans on an RV tour, we had a two-day stop at Playa Santispac, Baja Mexico. We took a kayak tour around Concepcion Bay, gathering different kinds of clams along the way. After a very fun day, we cooked our bounty of clams for dinner for us and the rest of the caravanners. The chocolate clams we topped with lime juice, salsa, and cheese and baked them in the oven a few minutes until the cheese melted. The steamer clams were mixed into a spaghetti sauce and served over pasta. Toast a few bolillos (Mexican hard rolls) with garlic and butter, and wow! What a feast. Not only did we have a lesson in gathering, cleaning, and cooking clams, but we learned how to kayak, too.

While we were visiting friends in Quartzsite, Arizona, they invited us to try seafood treats at a little concession booth. The chef had seafood flown in each day to Phoenix and drove from Quartzsite each morning to pick it up. At night, he fixed up all sorts of exotic seafood delights. So, there we were, sitting at a picnic table, having tasty oysters Rockefeller on paper plates, surrounded by desert and concession stands. Only in Quartzsite.

We have been full-timers for the past eight years and have explored the corners of North America and enjoyed local foods. Since we both enjoy cooking local foods, here is our list of favorite seafood meals we have cooked at home based on locally gathered/purchased ingredients when we are traveling in our RV. Newfoundland (Grand Codroy): a wonderful appetizer of fresh mussels cooked in wine, butter, and garlic. Thai mussels and Raspberry Point oysters on the half shell on Prince Edward Island, as well as other Malpeque oysters. Bar Harbor, Maine (Acadia National Park): lobsters that we bought at a local lobster pound and cooked at home, simply served with drawn butter. Alaska: fresh Kenai River sockeye salmon caught by my husband, in a soy sauce/brown sugar/ginger marinade. Hood Canal, Washington: cold Dungeness crab that we trapped and cooked ourselves and enjoyed at a beachfront campsite, plus oysters that we collected, shucked, and then barbecued. Los Barriles, Baja California, Mexico: a tuna we caught in the Sea of Cortez served sashimi-style with wasabi sauce. In addition, we always try to find the locals’ favorite restaurants to eat at when we travel in our motorhome. Here’s a sampling. Stone crabs at Joe’s Stone Crab, South Beach, Florida. Lobster Reuben sandwich at Key’s Fishery, Marathon, Florida. Black and Bleu Dorado Sandwich at Mangrove Mama’s, Florida Keys. Lobster roll at Red’s Eats, Wiscasset, Maine. Shack Crab Stew at the Crab Shack, just outside Savannah, Georgia. Fried shrimp at the waterfront Bowen Island Restaurant, near Charleston, South Carolina. Halibut and chips at Happy Face, Homer, Alaska. Haddock sautéed in garlic and butter at the Grand Codroy Restaurant, Grand Codroy, Newfoundland. We could go on and on about the wonderful experiences we have had traveling and enjoying the local specialties. We have more food chapters to explore.

Future questions:

1.  What song(s) or type of music do you enjoy most when traveling in your motorhome? Tell why.
2. How do you work at staying fit during motorhome trips?
