Tech & Travel Tips: December 2014

Necklace Storage

I take my jewelry box with me when we go south for the winter, but I needed something for my longer necklaces. Inside my wardrobe, on a side wall, I attached picture-hanging strips (I used Command brand) in two rows. The strips can be removed cleanly, do not require drilling, and do not leave damaging marks. The necklaces can be hung and accessed easily and do not take up much room.

Screen Saver For Fido

We travel with dogs in our motorhome, and a few times as we let them out, I thought they were going to crash through the screen in the door before we could get it open. Then I realized that from their point of view, the screen is basically invisible. I added a decorative screen-saver magnet that I found in a store’s garden section, and now the lower screen area should be more visible to the dogs.

Battery Safety

A tip for changing batteries safely: Pick up a blown bicycle inner tube from a bike shop. Cut two 4-inch or 5-inch pieces and fit them over the terminal ends of the battery cables for protection when disconnecting them. Mark the inner tube pieces so you will reconnect the correct cable to the proper terminal. Wear protective gear, including a face shield.

Be sure to follow the proper sequence when disconnecting and reconnecting cables. When disconnecting, first detach the negative (black) cable, then the positive (red) cable. When reconnecting, first attach the positive cable, then the negative cable. It might also help to take a picture of the cables beforehand to serve as a reference.
