Tech & Travel Tips: January 2015

Makeshift Rain Hat

I find those free motel shower caps so useful. They fit over a ball cap, making a perfect emergency rain hat. I place a shower cap with each of the small, foldable rain ponchos we keep in our vehicles. When the brim of a ball cap is covered with the shower cap, it does a better job than the poncho hood in keeping rain out of your eyes.

Reel Good Idea

When I bought my used 2007 Safari Damara, a 10-foot power cord and 10-foot water hose were in the right rear compartment. To conveniently store them, I bought two hand-crank hose reels at a tool store. The reels are easy to install, although in some cases the length of the reel guides might have to be reduced in order to fit into the compartment. My reels each hold about 20 feet of cord or hose.

Clean Leveling Jacks

When our motorhome was stationary awhile and the extended leveling jacks became dirty or dusty, we found that they retracted faster if we wiped them down with WD-40, as manufacturer HWH suggests. But to reach the jacks, my husband practically had to lie on the ground and stretch his arm out under the coach. This was no fun, especially when the ground was wet or dirty.

My solution was to purchase a “grabber” tool that typically is used to retrieve items from a high shelf. I wrap a small microfiber cloth around the curved grabber ends and secure the cloth with twist ties, so the cloth is easy to remove and wash. My husband lightly sprays WD-40 on the cloth, positions the grabber around the jack piston, squeezes the grabber handle shut, and gently wipes up and down (not side to side) a few times. Works every time!
