So, what do you do when you’re on the road in the motorhome or relaxing in a campground? This month’s discussion topic produced a variety of responses:

Describe a craft, hobby, activity, or sport you enjoy during a motorhome trip.

I enjoy crafts and quilting. I had made some simple block quilts on a sewing machine, but a few years ago I decided to make a quilt that required mostly hand sewing so I could work on it as we traveled. I chose a cathedral window queen-size bedspread quilt. What a challenge, but I was determined. About 16 months later, it was finished. We now have it on our bed. Friends and other quilters were amazed I had chosen such a complicated pattern for my first hand-sewn quilt. I sometimes wondered myself, but every stitch and hour I spent on it were worth the satisfaction I had when it was finished.

Geocaching (using a handheld GPS or smartphone to look for hidden containers) is a wonderful activity that is readily available wherever you are.  Currently, there are 2.7 million geocaches hidden around the world.  Some are concealed along trails; others are near historic structures, at scenic vistas, and even hidden in parking lots. Most likely, a geocache is within a mile of your current location!  Go to Geocaching.com and download a free app to begin this wonderful activity. Enjoy getting out, making new discoveries, and seeing new things.  Geocaching can be done individually, in a group, and with children or grandchildren, and you can spend as little or as much time as you want.  Some geocaches require 10 minutes; others can take hours or days. Note: FMCA has a geocaching chapter, the Eastern Area GeocOachers, and many FMCA members geocache while on the road. Enjoy and cache on!

We enjoy geocaching whenever we’re out in the RV.  It is a fun activity we can do everywhere we travel, gets us outside to enjoy the scenery of our new location, and is good physical and mental exercise. Plus, it’s fun!

My husband and I started our new life when we bought our small motorhome in 2008. We were so excited to travel and see everything that we did not take time to relax. We soon realized that we had to take some time off to refuel, as we say. I love to read while my husband does wood carving. Some campgrounds do not have a picnic table to hold his carving board, so he made some minor modifications to our motorhome. We also use our bicycles a lot while staying in a campground.

Future questions:

1. What’s the ideal duration for a motorhome trip (weekend, week, season, etc.)? Please explain why.

2. What one thing would you change about your motorhome if you could, and why?
