Family Matters: Yankee Travelers — 50 Years Young

Family Matters: Yankee Travelers — 50 Years Young
The Yankee Travelers celebrate food, fun, and friendship at their rallies, which are held in various locations throughout New England.

This fun-loving, family-oriented chapter will celebrate its 50th anniversary at a rally over Labor Day weekend.

Founded on February 9, 1974, the Yankee Travelers chapter has approximately 100 RVs in the membership. Although it is a large group, it feels like one big family. We have something for everyone when we get together. Our members range from young families with children all the way to retirees.

Our scope is the central New England area. We have members from Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island, and Vermont. From May through October, we hold approximately seven weekend rallies in the area. Our rallies take place in beautiful, sometimes historic locations. For example, our July rally is held on the historic Cape Cod Canal.

Yankee Travelers chapter members gather for good times — even when Mother Nature tries to thwart their rally plans.

Our Labor Day rally at Beach Acres Campground in Wells, Maine, is our showcase event. This year we will be celebrating our 50th anniversary at this get-together from August 29 to September 2. We will have a game night, a craft fair, a catered dinner, and a fun evening with an Elvis impersonator. During our rallies, we gather around a huge campfire every night after dinner to visit with our friends. Occasionally, someone will pull out their guitar and we will sing songs.

Another topic at every rally is food. The men in our chapter have such a good time cooking the meals together. They get up early every morning and head to the big tent to prepare a full breakfast and then return in the evening to cook dinner. This year at the Wells rally, we will be holding a baking contest, with prizes awarded to the top three winners. Afterward, we will all enjoy the wonderful baked goods for dessert.

Years ago, former chapter president Bob Townsend established a chapter charity and relief fund during his tenure, and it is something we have continued. We try to add to it at most rallies, even if it’s just through a 50-50 raffle. During the past few years, we have helped causes such as juvenile diabetes, a veterans’ hospital, a walk for breast cancer, and a walk for Alzheimer’s disease.

All are welcome to join our FMCA family. Chapter dues are $15 per RV. We have a great website at yankeetravelers.com, where you can view photos of our activities and learn more about us.

Safe travels, and we hope to see you at one of our rallies.
