Recall Corner: May 2015

May 1, 2015

Newmar Corporation has announced NHTSA recall 15V067000, which involves certain model-year 2013-2014 King Aire and Essex motorhomes manufactured from April 12, 2013, to October 18, 2013, and built on Spartan chassis. The potential number of affected units is 24.

In the affected vehicles, the steerage linkage castle nuts may have been improperly tightened during assembly. The nuts might loosen without warning, and the steering linkage may separate from the bell cranks. A loss of vehicle control could result, increasing the risk of a crash.

Newmar will notify owners, and Spartan dealers will inspect the steering linkage castle nuts and tighten them, as necessary. The inspection and repair are expected to take approximately four hours; however, because of service scheduling times, the service department may need the vehicle for a longer period. For more information, contact Newmar at (800) 731-8300.

Winnebago Industries has announced NHTSA recall 15V135000, which involves certain model-year 2015 Winnebago Era, View, and Itasca Navion motorhomes manufactured from September 11, 2014, to February 27, 2015, and built on Mercedes-Benz Sprinter chassis. The potential number of affected vehicles is 519.

In the affected vehicles, the abutting wedge may have been installed incorrectly. The abutting wedge is attached to the doorjamb to make it easier to open the door after a severe frontal impact. If a vehicle with an incorrectly installed abutting wedge is involved in such an accident, a greater force may be necessary to open the doors, increasing the risk of injury.

Mercedes-Benz is notifying owners about the recall, which was expected to begin in March. Mercedes-Benz dealers will check the abutting wedge installation and will correct it as necessary. The minimum repair time will be approximately 30 minutes; however, because of service scheduling times, the service department may need the vehicle for a longer period. For more information, contact Mercedes-Benz at (877) 762-8267.
