Members of the Kentucky Horse Shu Kru laugh often. And that’s one serious reason why the group has lasted almost 40 years. These RVers have an appealing attitude. Chapter president Dennis Ducharme said, “We’re a pretty easygoing bunch. We try to have a good time, and that seems to work for us.”

If you are ever within a 250-mile radius of Lexington, Kentucky, you owe it to yourself to visit these RVers at a rally. This month, April 20-22, they’ll be at Whispering Hills RV Park in Georgetown, Kentucky. Contact the rally hosts (Chuck and Sandy Bishop, 606-242-9118, csbish@bellsouth.net) to learn more.

It will be the first of several 2018 rallies the Kru has planned. Dennis said their rallies are a combination of seeing area sights and going out to eat, sharing potlucks, and general fellowship. These folks don’t always stay within that 250-mile radius, either. In June, they’re going back to a place they like in northeastern Ohio, home to a large Amish community.

Everybody finds something to do at the rally locations. In Amish country, it’s shopping for the ladies and visiting a big hardware store for the guys. While they were at Nashville, Indiana, a charity festival that includes outhouse races was going on. A couple of chapter ladies climbed aboard a wheel-based loo, and down the street they went!

Chapter members rolled up to an Eastern Area Rally in York, Pennsylvania, and afterward toured the battlefield in Gettysburg. Next, they headed to Black Bear Campground in Florida, New York, from which they took a bus tour of New York City.

At a regular rally, the women spend spare time playing board games and card games. “The ladies even have a traveling Uno trophy,” Dennis said with a laugh. “The men tend to sit around the campfire and talk about mechanical problems,” he added.

The group includes anglers, golfers, bicyclists, and hikers. “But eating is our main thing. We do a lot of hiking from the car to the restaurant,” Dennis said. On the first night of the rally, they typically do visit a local eatery, but the rest of the weekend’s menu is usually at the RV park, with potlucks and breakfasts.

All of their activities and fun have attracted several new members lately, so they have 27 coaches currently. Annual dues are $20, plus a $10 fee for badges the first year. A monthly newsletter provides chapter news.
